Halloween Music Mix, October 29, 2016

Playlist from the Halloween edition of the Saturday Night Music Mix, October 29, 2016.

Notes:

Damn this was a fun show to do. Here's a few highlights:

  • Bow Wow Wow, "I Want Candy", because as any kid can tell you, that's the true meaning of Halloween.
  • "Time Warp" from Rocky Horror. Dr. T played this the night before on KRCC but I thought, let's play the Time Warp again.
  • Alice Cooper's "Feed My Frankenstein". "I'm a hungry man but I don't want pizza. I'll burn down your house and then I'm gonna eat ya." That rhyme, now, that's clever.
  • Tom Waits doing "What's He Building in There?". I don't know what he's building but I want to see a movie based on this song.
  • Ken Nordine's "Lavender". Not strictly a Halloween song but Lady Lavender sounds like she might be a witch. Also if you've never heard Ken Nordine, what are you doing with your life?
  • Blue Oyster Cult doing "Joan Crawford", who has apparently risen from the grave.
  • M83's "Car Chase Terror", a little horror movie in a song. Extra creepy because there's one character but she seems to have multiple personalities.
  • Book of Love's "Tubular Bells / Pretty Boys and Pretty Girls (Regan’s House Mix)". The Exorcist meets 80's dance music.

KRCC's audio archives are currently on the fritz, so here's a Youtube playlist of music from the show.

Music Mix, October 22, 2016

Playlist from the Saturday Night Music Mix, October 22, 2016.

Notes:

  • New Wax Tailor! The new album, "By Any Beats Necessary".
  • It's been unusually hot around here lately, so I led off with Sharon Jones doing "Damn It's Hot".
  • Prince's "Automatic", because for some reason the line "I'm going to have to torture you now" has been stuck in my head.
  • Artichoke doing an acoustic cover of the Sex Pistols' classic "Anarchy in the UK".

Music Mix, October 15, 2016

Playlist from the Saturday Night Music Mix, October 15, 2016.

Notes:

  • The Robert Glasper Experiment's new album "Artscience". Glasper is a jazz artist but with the "experiment" explores other genres. I played Day to Day.
  • Turkuaz's Generator is a fantastic, funky track from their album from last year.
  • A set of robot-related tracks, ranging from Kraftwerk to Flight of the Conchords.

Music Mix, October 1, 2016

Playlist from the Saturday Night Music Mix, October 1, 2016.

Notes:

  • Red Baraat returns. Imagine if Trombone Shorty took a vacation in India.
  • Three tracks in a row featuring David Byrne but by others-- De La Soul, NASA, and Thievery Corporation
  • NASA featuring not just Byrne but also Chali 2na from Jurassic 5 and others. This one's amazing.
  • Dan the Automator featuring Mos Def. I didn't realize until later that the 2K7 album was produced in connection with an NBA video game.

Music Mix, September 24 2016

This week's new addition at KRCC is the soundtrack album from "The Get Down", Netflix's new TV series that dramatizes the origins of hip hop and rap in the 1970s. I did the first hour of the show with music from and inspired by the soundtrack.
